Happy Birthday, Honey!

Yesterday, June 6, was my honey's birthday! 34 years old, and getting better with age! He worked hard all day, painting our kitchen, which made it tricky for Faith and I to start the wood oven for cooking and baking. Finally, at about 5pm, he called it a day. I made a fancy pasta dish for the first time in what seems like forever, and my little baker, Faith, made a delicious chocolate cake for her daddy! She even got out the frosting tube and tips and did some creative decorating! I must say, she is quite skilled and gives even this experienced baker a run for her money!

We woke up again today to another clear blue sky. The weather has been perfect since we arrived back - it's summertime up here and we're making the most of every minute... well, every minute between painting, moving back in and caring for a baby! It's wonderful to be home.

This is the house that love built...

So fitting that today is the 13 year anniversary of Jeremiah and I "meeting" for the first time. It's a bit of a long story, but to keep it short... I was 20 and had saved a bunch of money to travel from Iowa, out west, to Oregon. I had tickets to several shows on Widespread Panic's summer tour. Along the way, my car was totalled, but I was still determined to do what I had set out to do... lots of shows to see, and I didn't want to miss out. I was dropped off in Eugene, Oregon at the Cuthbert Ampitheatre with just a backpack full of clothes, a tent, and a blanket. Hopeful that a friend would have some room in their car, I walked the lot until I found a good sized group of Iowa and Colorado "kids". Lo and behold, I was connected with a couple of Iowa natives with room to spare. Jeremiah, of course, was one of them. He had already been living in Colorado for a few years, and I was about to move to Durango for school. How funny that our hometowns were about 100 miles apart, and that we both loved Colorado, WSP, the outdoors, camping... well, really more in common than I could list. After that, as Jeremiah likes to say, we were basically attached.

I feel so fortunate that the two of us did so much "growing up" together. We did a lot of traveling in our early years together, some rugged mountain living, tons of camping and Jeeping trips, hiking, hanging out by rivers. I know we've seen hundreds of concerts together. We have been married for nearly 11 years, we have three beautiful children, and a precious, lovely and unique spot in the friendliest mountain town in the country (I'm sure of it!). We've seen the best of times, and as of late, some of the hardest times. We've made it through though, and are celebrating what is to come.

As some of you know, I spent some time away from our mountain home this winter/spring. While I was away, we were incredibly blessed to be given the opportunity to remodel our mountain cabin - our home. Jeremiah has spent countless hours working on it. He's done it all himself! He tore just about every wall down, reinsulated, re-wired, drywalled and painted. It's just the beginning, but the changes are indescribable! We are still not totally moved back in, but we're getting there quickly! I wish I could share some of our before photos with you today, but I'm sure if you read back in my blog pretty far you can find quite a few. I'm working on our laptop - we barely have our internet hooked up ;) and the big hard drive doesn't have a place to be quite yet. But, for those of you who would like a peek, here is what we have going on in our home...

So, this is our home. The house that love built, and is building. I'm happy. We're all happy... and the future is looking good! What to wear in this heat???

Whew... it's hot and humid this week in Iowa! I am so totally unprepared for this weather! Coming from the high mountains, where the temps rarely get above 70*, I just don't have a lot of shorts or sleeveless tops in my wardrobe! I had to resort to borrowing some shorts from my mother. That was good for a laugh, at the very least. As for the baby, well, that was easy! How about darling cloth diapers? Always in style, and they come in every color of the rainbow! Love them.

Holden is now 15 months, and I guess he should be saying a few things... but, he's really not! I think it *might* have something to do with his two older, very talkative sisters. What do you think? Luckily, he's pretty good about using gestures to let me know what he wants. Lately, whenever he seems frustrated, angry or a little whiny (Oh, yes! That happens!) I can be fairly certain that he wants to go outside.

He loves to be outdoors...

Which I guess is a good thing, considering it's probably the whole family's favorite place to be!

So, I'm guessing he's going to enjoy all of the summertime camping in the Colorado mountains that we plan to do! Hooray!

It's the simple things, really...

First of all, friends, I'd love to update you on my situation...

I should be back in Colorado, but alas, am not! All for a good reason, but of course I'm anxious to be back. We decided that since the kids and I are in Iowa, with most of our belongings, this would be a good time to remodel the cabin. This has been an ongoing project since we purchased it... and will most likely continue to be for some time, but some of the major improvements that were needed were impossible to do with all five of us living there... so, it made sense to get it done now.

Jeremiah has been chipping away at our most important changes. We have known for some time that we needed to re-insulate the roof. Condensation on the ceiling has been an issue forever, and we knew the only way to stop it was to tear the sucker off and re-do it! We also suspected that the condensation had caused some mold to grow - and we were right! So, now that the old has come down, the new must go up! With the insulation done, we are waiting for drywall. We hadn't had any drywall before. Everything in our home had been wood - tongue and groove, specifically, so it will be a huge aesthetic change to go back to painted walls. It will be interesting to see the difference, to say the least! We're also looking forward to some new lighting fixtures and more light in general. I'm so thankful that when I head back home, I can feel good about some of major concerns being remedied when it comes to the cabin. Still much to do, but so much closer to our goals!

Honestly, I've been living the "city life" for about three months, and I know it will be an adjustment to go back to mountain living. After all I have been through, and struggled with regarding my postpartum depression, my main focus is going to be on staying positive. I can't help but wonder what it will be like to go back to living in a small house where everyone is close and cozy, how it will feel to drive down bumpy dirt roads, and if I'll get my knack back for cooking on my beloved wood stove and baking in it's oven. Funny, but I miss that wood stove so much. FYI: I have a conventional oven in the cabin, but it remains useless while we wait for the power company to bring us new service - and I'm actually okay with that. I chose the mountain life and a rustic way of living when I was in a good place emotionally... With all my heart, I hope I will love it as much as I did back then.

On another note: I miss my mountain girlfriends! I'm slightly anxious about how I will fit back in. I didn't mean to up and leave and abandon everyone... but, that's sort of what I did. I hope everyone can understand that I wasn't myself right at that moment and I needed to get away and gain perspective. I did what I had to do - and I'm hoping the changes and lasting effects have made me a better mama, a happier person, and returned me too my good ol' Mountaintop Mama self!

*A couple of shots from Easter Weekend... we were blessed to be together as a WHOLE family. Living apart is not easy! I don't recommend it to anyone, really, but for now it's how it has to be! We cannot wait for a glorious, Colorado summertime together. I've learned so much from this experience - and moving forward, I'll never ever let myself get so down without asking for help first! Shoulda, woulda, coulda - but I'm confident it's all part of the master plan and I have faith that all will be well in the end!

Reusable Cloth Produce Bags - Greening Up Grocery Shopping

I've been meaning to do this for a long time... I've wanted to tell you and everybody about a change we made for the better! It's really pretty exciting because it's something that anybody can do. As you know, I really dislike creating unnecessary waste. I always cringe at the grocery store when I watch how many hundreds of plastic produce bags get used, knowing that they will all meet their fate in the garbage can later. For a long time we just didn't use bags for our produce at all! All of our apples, potatoes, carrots, peaches -whatever - would roll around in the shopping cart, and then in our bags, co-mingling with each other, unprotected. It wasn't a huge bother for me... but, I did sort of miss having them all separated and organized. Then I discovered reusable cloth produce bags, and they have made all the difference!

Helping hands... for less waste and a better future.

Now when we venture out to get groceries, we bring our bags along and fill them proudly. They weigh virtually nothing, so there isn't any additional cost associated with using them. Not only that, but to own a set of your own is very affordable. We carry them in our shop because we want you to have the opportunity to make this change as well. I can only imagine that we're not the only ones who feel a little sick watching all of the waste created by using plastic, disposable baggies for produce - knowing that when they make it to the landfill, they will sit there for hundreds of years. Reusable cloth produce bags are a much better alternative.

We've had nothing but success and smiles from strangers when we use these bags!

I would like to challenge and encourage you to make this change too! It's easy, green, and affordable for everyone. Why not do this for yourself and your family in honor of Earth Day? It's a small gesture that shows how much you really care about not creating waste, and not adding unnecessary plastics to our landfills!

Just for Mama Mondays

I love the weekends, and have really made a point to not "work" on Saturdays and Sundays. It's hard, because every day I spend "away" from my business, essentially causes a bit of a slow-down. There is a trade-off, however. I get to spend those two days completely focused on my kiddos. I have to make a conscious effort to stay off of email, facebook, my website, etc... but it's something that we all deserve. Being that I am a lover of the simple things, that I embrace a slower-paced life, and that I am a less-is-more type of person, it's not exactly out of my realm to step away from these things and turn off the noise. The biggest challenge is that when Monday rolls around, it's difficult to pick it all back up and start running again.

Mondays aren't a favorite day of many. I've felt like I really need a push, or something to get excited about to start the week off with a spring in my step and a smile on my face. I wonder how many other mamas out there feel the same way? We all know the weekends go too fast - and maybe we didn't get a chance to do all or any of the things we had planned to do... especially for ourselves. That's why I've decided to dedicate Mondays to all the mamas out there. This is just for you! Ashley & I wanted to create a magazine that would inspire everyday families to learn more about how the choices they make everyday impact the earth, their families and greater communities. We wanted to inspire folks to live more consciously and bring them the best, most updated information from all the leading experts and some secret special finds from amazing bloggers! Money! Ha...We may go that route eventually...when we find the right investors to take it to that level...but we are hopeful for a print version of what we are doing sometime in the future!

Well, there are so many! This premier issue is jam packed with amazing articles from so many folks. I LOVE that we have our "conscious close up" with Ina May Gaskin, America's leading midwife. She is a legend and someone I admire very much. There is also an interesting article with Pamela Anderson about having two homebirths. Not many folks know that she did that, and I think it might inspire people...There are also great recipes, natural egg dying, farmers rock, an adorable eco-fashion spread, eco-beauty bar, hot pics and so much more! 5) What are you most looking forward to when it comes to the future of Bamboo?

Do what you love!

I am so thankful for the warmer temperatures and sunshine! It's just what I need - the best, natural therapy I could ever ask for! Lately I've been enjoying getting outside, soaking up the sun and getting fresh air. While I was struggling in the early months of Holden's life with anxiety, I rarely felt like I could go outside... I was afraid he would become upset, or hungry or tired. It kept me trapped inside a lot. Now he is bigger, and I am better and I'm feeling quite courageous and back to my old self. We've been going out for walks daily and everyone has been enjoying it!

I love that my girls are big enough to take walks and hikes of significant length! They have always been good at getting out in nature and loving every minute, but we were always cautious to push the length of our outdoor endeavors in the early years. It works out now that Holden is small enough to be held, worn or pushed in a stroller, and that the girls are big enough to go the distance on their own. I'm loving it, and really looking forward to what the summer will bring!

Yesterday we walked a really long way, and I heard no complaints from anyone. I think they are thankful to be outdoors too, and to have their mom back in the groove of taking them out for fun adventures. We took a walk down a nice trail to a big park. Even Holden enjoyed trekking on foot for awhile. He was picking up every rock, stick and nutshell that he could find and was really digging the exploration! He's such a cute boy... I'm feeling really grateful for having wonderful kiddos. How could I be a bummed-out mommy when I have so many blessings?

So, I'm committed now to getting back to doing what I love! A big part of what makes me happy is being outside. I've made a decision that no matter how busy I feel I am on any given day, I'm going to take a break and get out there. I am always so happy when I do and so are the kids! I'm living my life, doing what I love, and loving what I do. Every minute! I hope where ever you are, you're able to get out there too!

Are You Market Ready?

I love Farmers Market season. One of my favorite summertime activities is gathering up the whole family and heading out to see what the local farmers, crafters and business folks have to offer! I love to create meals based on the local fare, and I love to find one-of-a-kind treasures to bring home to add to my collection. This is a lifelong love of mine and we always go prepared with cash in hand and bags to fill.

I suppose my passion for summertime markets began in my childhood, when my family would attend the market in Iowa City with our own homegrown sweet corn, sold out of the trunk of our Monte Carlo. That memory makes me smile. I wish I had a photo to go with it. I think back to those days when we would go into the "city", and I imagine myself being a bit in awe of what we were doing. I was a country kiddo, and going to town was always exciting. These trips to town must have had quite an impact on me, as I remember I made for myself an imaginary friend who I'm sure came along, as she was always with me back then. I named her "Sidy", and fondly remember linking that name to a dream of the place where there were lots of people, lots of diversity and lots to think and talk about. To this day, I still get excited to go soak up the scene. Part of the attraction is very much the people-watching, part of it is the diverse sights and sounds, and part of it is my desire to support the local economy by being an active member of it.

I am looking forward to attending as many markets as I can this coming summer. I will have the luxury of visiting a couple of markets a week as a shopper, but on Sundays I will have the privilege of going back to my roots and working my own tent! What a pleasure that will be! Jeremiah and I have signed on to work the Breckenridge (Colorado) Sunday Market! We will be bringing along a good selection of products from our very own shop, Natural Family Supplies! We plan to offer cloth produce bags, classic string bags, Envirosax, To-Go Ware products and more. These items will be so useful for market shoppers, and we hope to help educate folks about reusable options when food shopping!

Give the gift of Green

There are so many occasions to give the gift of Green! This past weekend, I attended a couple of showers - one for a bride-to-be and one for a mama-to-be. I took the opportunity to gift green, and hopefully encourage these lovely ladies to become a bit more conscious of the choices they make when purchasing products for use in their *new* lives.

A Green gift is perfect for anyone, for almost any occasion. A birthday, shower, wedding, anniversary, graduation or going away present for a new college student or a care package to someone far away! Green and natural products are a great way to show you care in so many ways! Folks will get a kick out of discovering what the intended uses are for their new goodies, and will hopefully become green advocates as a result!

Here is an example of a great, fun, interesting and pretty "Green" gift. I gave this to the bride-to-be, and not only did she enjoy exploring all of the items that were new to her, everyone at the shower took a turn viewing, reading labels and learning about great ways to head down the green road!

Instead of using gift wrap, I used a nice bin with a pretty print that she will be able to put to use in the future. I am a big fan of doing this with gifts. Wrapping paper always makes me a little sad - it just gets thrown away. No matter what the recycled content of the paper is, it's not usually salvageable for reuse! I lined the bin with some colorful dish towels, and that set the stage for the rainbow of gifts I included!

As for the individual items in the bin, I chose colorful, useful products that I knew would come in handy for anyone! To-Go Ware reusable flatware is a gift that everybody can find a use for! It only takes a simple explanation and the brainstorming begins! As they were passed around the table, all of the ladies were coming up with ideas of their own - from camping, to eating out, to the church pot-luck. I think it helped raise awareness of all the disposable flatware that end up in the trash!

A package of SKOY cloths was another addition that got gals talking. Lucky for me, some of my family memeber that have used and enjoyed SKOY were there to give personal testimonies of all the handy ways SKOY can be used. Again, a discussion about the waste created by paper towels, and the savings created by having a reusable option!

I included some Charlie's Soap because I love it, and it's an easier alternative to the chemical-laden detergents that so many folks use, than giving Eco-Nuts! While I love Eco-Nuts and know the benefits of using them, I think when introducing somebody who might be new to the green and natural lifestyle, trying to convince them to use "nuts" in their laundry might be a stretch. Maybe. At least Charlie's powder somewhat resembles what people are used to seeing in the laundry!

Loofa-Art Rubbits are great little natural cleaning sponges! Plus, they are so pretty and come with a cute little bucket! Their rainbow of colors looked great with the wool dryer balls that I threw in! Those took some explaining, but once I shared some information, the bride-to-be was all about giving them a try. I explained how to scent them with essential oil, and she was intrigued!

I also tossed in a couple of Envirosax, because everyone needs those, and a bar of LuSa Electric Mocha coffee kitchen soap, which is perfect for those times that you've cut onions and garlic and can't get the smell off your hands! It really does the job!

Celebrating 60 Years of True Love

Last night our family celebrated my grandparent's 60th wedding anniversary. It's a milestone that not many folks reach - a very special occasion, and we treated it as such. All of the Warners got together to share a meal, some drinks, stories, laughs and lots of love. We had a fantastic time being together to honor this classy, generous and wonderful couple. They are an excellent example of true love that we all look up to.

I love my grandma and grandpa so much. We've always had a very special relationship. I could not have been blessed with better grandparents. I am so grateful that my children are also getting the chance to build a strong, and loving bond with them... It actually makes me glad to be here in Iowa for this extended time. There are memories being made every day that we will all cherish for our lifetimes.

It is amazing to look at our now large family and acknowledge that we are all here because of these two people. Through their love, they brought three sons into this world... and the rest is history. Our family has been blessed with beautiful, healthy, fun and smart children. My grandparents legacy will live on through all of us. I hope that all I have learned from them about life and love sticks with me forever, and that I can live in such a way that makes them proud. Really, if there were ever two people that I look up to, it is them.

Family Cloth: It's not just for T.P. anymore!

Family Cloth is now available at Natural Family Supplies!

Some of you may remember my post back in January, 2010. If not, you can read it here. Back then, we were in the midst of cutting out paper products all together. While that change was a big one that we don't necessary adhere to consistently, the gist was that there are ways to find reusable alternatives to any disposable product. Using "Family Cloth" is not something that everyone wants to do. I can understand that, and I don't expect that it's something most folks view favorably, however, I do hope that you will make some considerations when it comes to what paper products you use and throw away on a daily basis.

Family Cloth doesn't have to be just an alternative to toilet paper! I'm guessing a lot of you are glad to hear that. Family Cloth can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Use can use them as an alternative to kleenex, disposable baby wipes, hand towels, napkins, skin care, face wipes and more!

The Earth Tones Mix!

I have recently added some beautiful, soft and colorful Family Cloths to the shop! I am especially fond of these because they are a bit less bulky than my homemade version. The family cloths that we now carry are one layer, which is perfect for little noses, little hands, little bottoms and for your own needs. Use them in the bathroom for extra comfort, and especially if you are already a cloth-diapering family or a mama who uses washable pads. They fit right in with that sort of laundry. Otherwise, they do come in quite handy for the other myriad of uses that I mentioned above. May I suggest that you keep one set for the dirty work, and another for hands and faces? That's what we plan to do! Color coding your cloths (even for kitchen/bathroom/household cleaning) is a great way to keep track of what cloth is meant for certain jobs!

Three Cheers for Clarity!

Does anyone else out there believe that there is a plan that we don't have control over? That destiny is not something we necessarily get to decide ourselves? I do. I have a blessed life, a happy life, a wonderful life - and, I have a confession to make. I have struggled with Post-Partum Depression since Holden was born. I've debated with myself, over and over, as to whether or not to share this information. At this point in time, I feel like sharing the truth is the only way that anyone can understand my indecision over the past year, my desperation to change something - anything, and my need to find comfort somwhere - anywhere!

I could not have imagined myself in the position I found myself in after Holden was born. Even after raising two babies prior to him, I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. He would cry and I would become anxious, sad and fearful. I felt like I could never leave the house because I wouldn't know what to do if he started crying. I sort of holed-up in the cabin... and even after being a home-body and loving that sort of life, I began to feel trapped. I was so confused as to why I had these feelings. I had been such a happy mama to the girls, totally competent and together. I felt like I was a good mama to them when they were babies, but with Holden, I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me.

I should have sought appropriate help sooner. I let the feelings fester and evolve untill they turned into something else. A lonliness that could not be cured, a sadness that could not be explained, a desparation that I could not correct. I knew something needed to change, but could not admit to myself that the problem was within me. I let myself believe that it was circumstance and situation that was causing me to feel so down. I had trouble coping with my everyday - caring for the baby, and the girls. Homeschooling felt like a chore instead of the joy it had once been. Running my little business took everything out of me. Who was this person that had formerly been me? Hence, I decided that I had to get out. I wanted out of my own skin, but since that wasn't possible, I decided I had to move and start over. That's why I sought out job opportunities in Iowa for myself and my husband. I thought going back to family would be just the lifeline I needed to get back on my feet and to get a fresh start.

You know what? I had that part right. Coming back to Iowa gave me the fresh perspective I needed to get back on track. After hitting the low of lows, I realized what my real trouble was. Not my home life, not running my small business, not the stress of homeschooling and raising three children, and not the trapped feelings I was experiencing. The trouble was that I had Post-Partum Depression. As soon as I recognized what was really going on, I was able to see clearly and I am so thankful for that. It still pains me ever so slightly that I could have taken steps earlier to make things better, but I won't dwell on the past. Instead, I'm looking towards our future and am more excited than ever.

I will head back to Colorado in 6 weeks. In that time, Jeremiah will be making some major renovations to the cabin. We'll get a new ceiling, which is so very necessary. New lighting fixtures and wall coverings are also in the plans and a new closet in my bedroom. I love our cabin life, but had also felt overwhelmed by the amount of work that needed to be done... and it will be such a sweet treat to go back. I won't have to reinvent myself or my life... I know I will fit back in perfectly. I give thanks to God that my children are so resiliant and adaptable. I give thanks that my husband is so wonderful, supportive, understanding and forgiving. I give thanks that my family in Iowa would do anything for me, and love me unconditionally and help me find that light at the end of the tunnel that I've been looking for.

I never expected to struggle with Post-Partum Depression. My lifelong dream was to be a mama... I could never imagine a better job - so I was unbelievably confused when I felt the weight of sadness after Holden was born. I had to go through a lot, and put my family through a lot before I realized what was going on, but I'm healing now and it feels good! I thank you, readers, for standing by me, letting me relive the good times with my countless photo albums, stories, and for your support in my small business venture. You will be thrilled when you see what our future holds. We are about to add an entirely new element to the shop, and I couldn't be more happy! Now that I have clarity, I know exactly what direction we are headed in and it's a good one!

I want to share with you a poem... you probably already know it, but I feel it sums up my life perfectly. It brings tears to my eyes when I read it and realize that it is the story of my life. A good life, a happy life... a wonderful life!

Country Roads Take Me Home...

I spent the weekend with my best friend, my mother! We created new memories while talking and laughing about the good old days. It was a bit of an exploration into why I am who I am - what made me the kind of person I am today.

I've always known we didn't have much when I was little, but it never mattered to me. We lived in a tiny house (I still love tiny houses) way out in the country. We had land, a huge garden, an awesome tree swing, pigs and cows for neighbors, a million cats and lots of love. Back then, my folks were hippies - bonafide. We listened to a lot of music, danced, had parties and played outside all of the time.

I really enjoyed hearing my mom retell many of my favorite childhood stories this past weekend... so much so, that I asked her to dig a few photos out that I could share here. I don't have a photo for every story, but that's okay... the camera in my mind has captured the memories better than a photo could ever convey.

I had a lot of farm cats. They started out multi-colored, but eventually they were all born white. Why would that be? I don't know if any of there were officially ours, of if they were all strays that took a liking to our spot - but, I know I enjoyed always having little playmates. I was an only child back then. My brother is considerably younger than me.

Here is a photo of my uncle Steve, my daddy, our wolf-dog Bucky and myself. Just a portion of our garden is shown here. Mom reminded me this past weekend that we used to sell the sweet corn that we grew out of the trunk of our Monte Carlo at the Iowa City Farmers Market in the summers. What I remember most were the thousands upon thousands of brightly colored, giant zinnias that we grew. I loved those gorgeous flowers. I also remember my mom picking Kohlrabi out of the garden and eating it raw.

This is my goat. I don't think he had a name. I remember he used to stand on top of our dog house and that he used to eat everything in site. I think he was a birthday present from my maternal grandfather.

Here I am with my aunt Robin, who was the Matron of Honor in my wedding, Buckey and the goat. Not long after this photo was taken, the goat went missing. We sort of think Buckey ate him... he was, after all, a wolf dog. How could he resist?

One winter, we had a horrible blizzard. We were snowed in for days, and when we finally got out, we had to stay with my grandparents for awhile. By the time we got back to our house, all of the pipes were frozen and of course, our only toilet cracked and broken... so, for a time we used it for empty cans. After that we planted flowers in it.

There are a few more stories that I think about fondly.

My dad always laughs when he retells the story of me walking down our little dirt road with a huge bull following me. I was saying "Dad, look at this cow!"... and of course, it wasn't just a cow :)

This is quite possibly my favorite: My mom was about 8 months pregnant with my brother and I was home with her. My dad was at work, so it was just us girls. One of us looked out the window and saw a bunch of pigs running into our yard. There wasn't much we could do, but my very pregnant mama grabbed a broom and chased after them. They got into the garden and started digging up our potatoes. Somehow in the chaos we got ahold of my dad on the phone and he called the farmers to come get their pigs. I can't remember how much damage was done... but it is a good, gosh-darn funny memory.

My mama always loves to sing, and she's funny when she sings, but endearing at the same time. I know it's not about rural Iowa, but whenever I hear "Country roads take me home to the place that I belong", I hear it in my mom's voice and I think of our little house, our little life... a simple time, a lovely time: My childhood.

Festival Family Album - Part 1

As the winter winds down, I've been spending some time sorting through photos and putting albums together. It's something I've been putting off for years. I like to think of it as a wonderful chore to browse through all of our photos on the computer and pick which ones to put where. Instead of focusing on chronological order, I've decided to put them together by theme. I'm only partway through our photos, but I started categorizing some into our family festival and concert experiences and thought I'd share a handfull.

As long as Jeremiah and I have been together (and before we were together) we have gone to as many concerts and festivals as we possible can. We've always had our favorites: Widespread Panic, The Dead, Further, Festival in the Clouds, Phil and Friends, Copper Mountain Sunsation, South Park Music Tour, anything bluegrass, jam band, reggae, rock... man, the list could probably go on forever. When we had our kids, concert going naturally became a part of our family life and we learned early how to make it work! Of course there have been many, many shows that we have attended without the kids. Sometimes a sitter is necessary. Sometimes we'll take our kiddos to the pre-concert "lot scene" at Red Rocks just to soak up the vibes, but not take them into the venue. We've been known to hike the hill behind the Rocks and watch the show from afar with the kids. We know when and what is appropriate for kids and what is not. It's important to us that our children learn to love, enjoy, appreciate and groove to music.

So, here is good chunk of photos from the last 6ish years... Unfortunately in the early years we didn't have a digital camera, so there are some big gaps, but we have been able to document a lot of our fun, good, family show times!

What is it about conventional detergents and softeners that makes them dangerous? When I apply that to my children, it makes perfect sense.

They are happiest when they are wild and free in nature. Without rules and guidelines, they know just what to do. There are so many adventures to be had, and with unlimited imagination as a resource, they have everything in the universe available to them. They create games, stories & dramas, and sometimes they get so caught up that reality seems far away.

Even the little man feels right at home when outdoors. He is thrilled to be experiencing his first steps in the grass, his first taste of independence with the wind blowing on his face, his first adventures of choosing which direction to take and what to explore next.

I think I would consider myself to be a "good thing" too. I love to be wild and free and run through the grass and feel the wind in my hair. What makes you feel good, wild and free?

What We Do

In my last post, I told you a bit about us, about who we are. Now I want to let you know more about what we do.

For a long time we had essentially been living our dream. We had found a wonderful balance for our family, living a simple life in the mountains. Jeremiah had a great job as a "Green" building project manager, and I was a stay-at-home mama. While Jeremiah worked during the week, I homeschooled our daughters. We stayed very active in our church and in the community. Everything was seamless and beautiful. On the weekends and days off, we hiked, camped, went fishing, skiing, sledding and caught whatever shows and festivals we could. Life was good... all good.

Then we had a few loops thrown our way. The economy changed. Folks weren't building as much, and Jeremiah's job didn't disappear, but it changed - a lot. Right about that time, we happily realized that we'd be adding a third child to our little tribe. Joyous news, but also a bit scary as our future was slightly unsure. We had so much to think about. It was hard to process all of the changes.

We both decided that I had to start doing something to help support the family... and being that I had a current love for all things natural for baby, and a love for online shopping, we decided to meld the two together and create our shop, Natural Family Supplies. You can read more about that process here. The shop itself has expanded and evolved since it's inception, and so we don't just carry natural items for babies, but for whole families. We expect that it will continue to grow and change over time, and are excited about the coming months and years.

I have a job now! I love running my own little business. It's not only fun and fulfilling, but I get to "meet" wonderful mamas from all over the country. It's so much fun. What I do is quite time consuming, but I enjoy it and always take breaks to play with Holden, chat with friends, take walks outdoors. I wouldn't change a thing about my huge undertaking.

Jeremiah has also experienced a shift in his line of work. Although he is still working with the same Green builder, he is also doing quite a bit of furniture crafting. He uses reclaimed lumber and timbers to create beautiful pieces of functional art! He has done several coffee tables, and end tables, and has a kitchen table in the works for us. I know he is also getting into the business of crafting wood counter tops as well. His future is bright, and we hope to have his own website, featuring his work, up sooner than later!

I hope this gives you a glimpse at what we do! It says a lot about our working life, so I thought I'd add to our family album and show you more of what goes on after hours and during our time off! Enjoy!

Meet The Tribe - A Family Album

Recently we have made a lot of new friends online, and I suspect we have some new readers who might not know much about us and our history. I've decided to take the next few days to reintroduce ourselves... who we are, what we do, and why we do it!

We are the Mountaintop Tribe. A family of five high altitude lovin', nature romping, tree-hugging, free spirits. Although a portion of us are currently on hiatus from our cabin in the mountains of Colorado, our hearts still reside there.

Jeremiah and I met in 1998 at a Widespread Panic concert in Eugene, Oregon. We were both "on tour" following the band for the summer, and to make a long story short, I needed a ride! He had room, so I hopped in - and really, the rest is history. Jeremiah was already living in Summit County, CO and I was about to begin school in Durango, CO. The funny thing was that we were both originally from Iowa - our hometowns only about 90 miles apart. It was fate - so very meant to be. He came to live in Durango for a time, and then we both settled on a life in South Park/Alma, Colorado. We were married in August of 2000 and had our first baby, Faith in 2002.

After Faith was born, we did spend some time in Iowa. We value family, and really enjoyed having them around for support and so that they could bond with Faith, and then Georgia who joined us in 2004. In 2006 we felt the itch to get back to our roots in Colorado, so again we packed up our lives and left for the mountains.

There just isn't anything like mountain life. The sky is so much bluer, the air is so crisp and the views can't be beat. Folks in our community are like none other anywhere in the world, and we have such a large group of friends, most of whom have become our extended family. I am always amazed at the love we get from them, no matter where in the world we are. I get messages, calls, emails and good vibes sent my way, daily. I know I am loved and missed while I am away, and that's why the tugging at my heart is almost too much to bear. I suspect that after this time here in Iowa, I'll be back. "Why are you in Iowa again?", you may ask... well, it was originally because of some new opportunities and of course, it's also the baby thing! Holden joined us in 2010 and I wanted for him the same experience with family that my girls had. Time to get to know his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. It's so important to my soul that my children have this connection with their relatives. Thus, the hiatus - for the second winter in a row, I might add.

The Kids Favorite (Practical) Things!

I don't really do anything without my children. They are always active and present when I'm working, relaxing, driving, thinking, doing dishes... you get the picture. We're always together! I keep them as involved with what I am doing as I can, and they are all very familiar with what it takes me on a daily basis to keep the business running. Even little Holden seems to understand when it's time to pack orders, or count inventory. They are learning a lot, and because they also enjoy and use the products we sell, they feel like they are experts on what we do!

Faith asked me yesterday if she could do a blog post on some of their favorite things, and I thought that would be a great idea! While I know that she really loves our natural art supplies, specifically Mary's Softdough and their Lyra colored pencils, Georgia enjoys Sarah's Silks, and Holden the Plan Toys, we decided to go a different route and share what we love on an everyday basis. The basics that we feel are necessary. I told them all to pick something to share, with the exception of Hodi - I picked for him. This is what we came up with!

Holden's Baggino Learner's Bib is a must have! It covers his entire shirt - sleeves and all! I love it because it's so soft and easy to use, and because it has worked since he was 4 months old and will continue to work through his toddler years. It's so versatile, size-wise and it will even work as an art-smock when we have that need! My little Mr. is always into making a mess, and this bib saves me from having to change shirts 4-5 times a day. Seriously!

All of us LOVE our Envirosax. The work for just about any need you may have for a bag! Faith uses hers for books, Georgia carries her boots to school in hers, and of course I use mine for shopping & toting daily supplies to work. We all have our favorite prints, but Faith was especially excited about the "Robot" from the Envirosax Kid's Collection. As she always tells me, "Mom, I'm not like other girls! I like dinosaurs and robots". Okay, so perfect! She proudly carries that bag everywhere she goes!

Here are some items we all use all the time. Our To-Go Ware Tiffin! It's two-tiered so that you can keep a salad separate from you fruit or veggies or sandwich, and it has a little plate in it! It has a convenient handle & clasp that keeps it all together and easy to carry along. I have mine with me everyday and always get comments about how cute it is. It's stainless steel too, so no yucky plastic! It is an excellent lunch box! Probably one of my favorite items in our shop! We of course also love our To-Go Ware flatware. Always handy, and always keeping us from using disposable while on the go. Another new favorite are the water bottle "sleeves". The kids were so excited when they got to pick their own and even more giddy when they realized that they are reversible! Ooooh!

Georgia is trying to use her To-Go Ware chopsticks for her strawberries... but, I'm thinking that just poking the stick through the strawberry isn't quite right. Inventive, yes.

Family Time

Papa was here for a visit this weekend. He is currently still in Colorado, working hard. Seems like all sorts of important projects popped up right before we hit the road for Iowa, so he continues to hold down the fort back at the cabin. He's happy there, and I'm glad for him. Right now, I'm happy here and so are the kids. The future, as always, seems slightly unclear - logistically. Quite honestly, when I came to Iowa, it was because opportunities were presenting themselves and I felt that for the good of our family's future, I had to jump on them. Jeremiah's work had slowed a bit, and we weren't sure if we would be able to sustain our life in the mountains. It had been tricky for some time to make ends meet out there... so, what to do? Moving where work was being offered seemed like the right thing to do.

I stand by that decision... but, it does seem like everyday I'm waiting for that "game changer". You know, that moment of clarity where it becomes obvious what we should do. Like I said, projects are popping up all over the place for Jeremiah. Some of which could be done here or there... and, I haven't completely committed to opening up shop for strict, set hours. Could we be a commuter family? Live part-time in Iowa and part-time in Colorado? Maybe. The five of us are extremely adaptable. We seem to be able to adjust to any conditions, anywhere. We all make friends just fine and feel comfortable in new places and situations... ah, makes me once again think about that little part inside of me that wants to live life as a nomad. I was born this way!

So, anyway - the wheels in my mind are always turning. When I opened the shop with the goal of being a mobile store, I might have been thinking in this direction anyhow. A good friend suggested that while in Iowa, instead of opening up full time, I should host "Open Houses". I like that idea. I don't think I thanked her enough for opening that door for me. I'm fortunate to have flexibility in all things, and I think I'll continue to take advantage of that for now. Hmm... at least this all makes life interesting!

Something just for you!

Do you put your children first, before yourself? Silly question, isn't it? Of course you do. It's just what comes naturally to mamas. We make sure they are bathed, clothed, fed, loved - cared for in all ways - before we even take the time to consider our own needs at the most basic level. I'm sure you can remember (or are going through it right now) the time when your baby was new. There wasn't even a moment to sneak in a shower, pick up the house, cook a meal... and even as that very demanding time passed, there still isn't much time to dedicate to yourself, right?

Now, think about all of the steps you take to live a natural lifestyle. You want safe cleaning products in your home so as not to expose your kiddos to toxins, you buy organic foods for you family whenever you can, you use natural soaps and skincare products, you might even be a cloth diapering advocate. If you take all of these steps, then I have a suggestion for you: Why not switch to washable, reusable feminine products for yourself?

This might not be the most comfortable topic for everyone, but honestly, it is important and not that big of a deal! Disposable pads and tampons are not only wasteful, but more often than not, toxic! Most of these products go through a process of chlorine bleaching which creates dioxins and carcinogenic compounds - yuck! Disposables are also thought to cause more painful cramping and heavier periods! Who needs that?

There is an alternative! Washable pads and menstrual cups are great options. Truthfully, they aren't much more trouble to use than the disposables. For the pads, instead of tossing them into the garbage after each use, throw them into a wet bag, or soaking container of some sort and then empty directly into the washing machine when necessary. For the cups, they just need a good rinsing between uses - and a more thorough wash occasionally. I'll admit that the cups may not be the best option for everyone when on the go, but after some time, you can adjust your routine to make it possible to use these alternatives.

About four years ago, I made this switch for myself. We were taking steps back then to cut paper products out of our home completely. I have never looked back. I invested in GladRags, which we now proudly sell in our shop, and I have been pleased with their quality as I still have my original stash! Spring Clean - Green Routine!

Spring Mix and Rainbow Dryer Balls get me in the mood for the colors that are bound to burst forth from the ground when Spring finally arrives!

I can't stop thinking about spring! I miss green grass, green leaves, green sprouts popping through the soil. I'm anticipating warm weather, thunder storms and long walks in the woods! Sooner than later, it's going to start happening... so, that's why I'm ready to get a jump start on my spring cleaning.

It happens to a lot of us. We want to be ready to get out in nature, head to festivals and enjoy picnics in the park... so we feel anxious when the temperature starts to rise! We want open the windows, dust off the sills, put away the winter garments and get down to business. There's so much cleaning and laundry to be done - and I want to have it over with by the time we can really get outside to play.

We've added some new products to help you get in a green routine when it comes to cleaning!

I'm thinking about it early this year... It's been on my mind a lot! One of my goals is to use eco-friendly products to do the job. I'm so super-sensitive to the chemical scents of conventional cleaners, and I don't want that icky stuff around my kids either. I've been on the hunt for a long time for the right products and I think I have found them!

I'm enjoying our Eco Nuts cleaning products. They have a nice selection to conquer any task you might encounter in your home. Barefoot Books - Review & Giveaway

I love books. In fact, I'm a little obsessed with them. Some of you already know this about me. It started when I was little. My grandmother would pick me up from school every Thursday and take me to the bookstore where I would pick a new book to add to my collection. I had a huge library as a child, and I devoured book after book. I read as much as I could. This love of reading continued through my teens year, through college and then into my adult life. When I began homeschooling my daughters, I made a commitment to myself, and to my family, to create a large and diverse home library. I bought "lots" of books from ebay, visited community and library book sales, and bought new and used curriculum, texts and story books to the point that I filled one huge bookcase and two smaller ones. Then, I started filling cabinets. I'm not a "materialistic" person in the slightest, but I do somewhat "hoard" books. During my recent move, most of the boxes I filled were full of, you guessed it, books!

You can only imagine how thrilled I was when Amy Mangiaracina contacted me and offered to let me sample some of what she sells: Barefoot Books. Oh, I had heard of them alright! I had even at one point considered representing and selling them myself, but never took that plunge. We all know what direction I took in my own endevour, Natural Family Supplies, so to actually get my hands on some Barefoot Books materials was an exciting prospect and I was not disappointed. Here is some of what Amy had to share about them:

Barefoot Books is an award-winning children's book publishing company, dedicated to bringing art and story to children from all walks of life. It was started by two mothers who were seeking books that inspired children's creativity and imagination, while also instilling respect for other planets and the environment. Their books are all printed on ancient forest-friendly paper, using soy or vegetable-based ink.

Amy Mangiaracina, a mother of a 15 month old and an upstate NY resident, is a Barefoot Books Ambassador. She sells their beautiful books, puzzles, puppets, and music online, at home parties, and at community events and fundraisers. Each month she contributes 20% of her online sales to her designated nonprofit of the month. This month's cause is a family in her community, whose daughter is being treated for leukemia.

My daughters enjoying The Story Tree.

Amy was so kind to send us three differnt selections from Barefoot Books. First I'd like to talk about "The Story Tree" by Hugh Lupton & Sophie Fatus. My girls were so excited to sit down and read this fantastic book to each other, aloud! It was sweet and wonderful to see the way their eyes lit up with each new story, to hear them laugh and ponder, ask each other questions and gather some conclusions and morals. What I also loved was that the stories were so incredibly culturally varied! Coming from such a small town, we haven't had enough "culture" or exposure to different traditions and tales. The illustrations were fun, rich and engaging and we absolutely fell in love with this book! There are several stories that we will certainly read again and again. A fantastic find for any family looking for a good read-aloud book.

Even though Georgia was busy with her own book, she had to get in on the action with Faith.

The second book Amy sent was "Whole World: Fun Eco Activities". This book was also right up our alley! My girls LOVE workbooks, activity books & coloring books, and this is an all-in-one package! I also love that the headline on the book is "Go Green! Go Barefoot!" Yay! Could it be any more perfect for us, for you, for every child? There are educational activities on every page. Earth-friendly, world-aware crosswords, hidden pictures, creative coloring pages, mazes and more! We're not done with this one yet, and I love the hours of time well spent that we're getting out of it! There's even a spot to write a story about the world we live in using the information learned from all the activities in the book! It's interactive, conversational and good for all! We love this one too!

Faith enjoyed the "Whole World Eco Fun Activities" book a lot!

Finally, I'd like to tell you about an oldie, but goodie, done Barefoot style! "If You're Happy and You Know It" is a classic song - in this book we have it illustrated with wonderful children all over the world. It's colorful, beautiful and enjoyable! The lyrics are perfect for any occasion and kids love it! If you can believe it, this was Holden's first experience with this song. It didn't take him long to catch on to the actions, and he was dancing right along, clapping his hands in no time. Did I mention that this book comes with a CD recording? Well, it does! The CD is top-notch too! The recording is lovely - a mother and her children singing with rich background music. We listened over and over and over - no doubt that this family has it down. Even Baby Holden!

This Space: A Place for Business

Well, here it is! My little spot... It took me a couple of weeks to get to the point where I could move in and start to feel at home, but I'm here now and LOVING it! It is so nice to have a place to "go to work" where I can bring my little man and get some things done! I haven't done much to this little place yet, as I haven't really decided what it is I want to do - but, I have set up my computer & printer and a play space for Holden. Now, it's time to get down to business!!!

The one dilemma I am having is if I want to actually open the doors as a "retail" store. I really like the flexibility of running an online business. I know that if we open up as a store, I'll have to set actual hours and be here for the duration of those on a daily basis! I guess I'm not in a rush to make that decision. For now I'm content having a spot just to be... I still consider this to be a "home-based" business, as I feel very much at home right here! It is where I grew up. The salon right next door is where my father, brother and sister-in-law work, and where I spent countless days playing, hanging out, and then working back in the day.

As you can see, the place is just full of bins and boxes. I didn't include a photo of the storage room in the back that has the rest of my inventory - because I can't even get in there!!! It's packed to the brim. That is one thing I need to do - get proper shelving. I guess if I am going to take that step, I might as well put everything on display, and then maybe I will just have to open the doors??? I don't know yet - time will have to tell.

So, this is where I'll be a lot of the time. Keeping busy with the business, entertaining the baby and soon starting to do some online marketing for the salon! I have a lot on my list and now that I have all of my "stuff" in one spot, I hope to become organized enough to start accomplishing more in each day!

By the way, I'm open to suggestions and advice :) I'd love to hear your input!

Milestones

My little man turned one this past Saturday. It's hard to imagine that a year has passed since I gave birth to my blonde-haired, blue-eyed Holden Truth. I can't say that I have had the easiest year, or that each day of his infancy was effortless, because it has been hard. Hard to revisit the demands of a newborn, hard to keep up with two older children, hard to balance all that has to be done in a day. But, I did it. I got through it. Even with challenges that arose weekly, daily, hourly... I got through them and I feel good about that. I guess the one year mark is a milestone for me as much as it is for him.

Speaking of milestones, Holden began walking on his first birthday. He had taken some steps previous to his special day, but on Saturday, he really started getting brave and taking off! It's really something to watch your baby start to walk. Each step taken is like a step towards increased independence. It's darling to behold, thrilling to the baby, but it tugs a bit at the heartstrings knowing there is no stopping the process of growing up. At one end, I'm glad to gain a little more space for myself, but at the other, it's difficult (for me) to let go and acknowledge that this child will be able to interact with others, feed himself and get around a bit without me. I can admit that I have control issues, so it's no surprise that I have a hard time even letting others walk out of the room with him. No, I've never left him with a babysitter! Yes, like I said, I have control issues... but, if it goes like it did with the first two, this is the point when I start to accept that I don't have to be connected to my baby every second of every day. Another milestone... for me.

So, I'm not sure why I'm sharing this. I guess just to say that my baby is one. I'm proud of him and of me and of my other two precious children. We made it through the first year! Hooray!!! Even after all the sleepless nights, busy days and big life changes (examples: starting a business, moving out of state) the one resounding thought in my head is that we are so very blessed! So very blessed. I can celebrate the hard times because I know they will be rewarded with good ones, I can wipe away tears because I know I'll get smiles in return. I can rejoice that we have reached this one year mark - a milestone for me as much as my babe.

Green is the new Red this Valentine's Day!

This year, my family is committed to taking every opportunity to make the world a "greener" place. Every holiday we are giving gifts that exemplify this commitment, and Valentine's Day is the perfect occasion to show those you care about that you love them and the world in which we live! Instead of candy, cards and general "junk", we want to spread the word about reusable and earth-friendly items.

Valentine's Day is not typically a big-budget holiday for us. I'm guessing that is true for a lot of folks. We like to keep our spending reasonable, and feel that we have a good grasp on what a great gift can be within our means. It's amazing how many more people you can show love to when you choose items with a lower ticket price.

Mountaintop Tribe Journeys to the City!

The time has come, the time is now...

We are mountain folk in our hearts. It's true. We love the air up here, we love the views, we love to be in nature and we love to share in the community that we have cherished calling home. And even with these truths in our hearts, we today begin a journey that will move us away from this place if not forever, at least for now.

The time is now.

I have spent the last four years homeschooling my daughters, living a life at home in a cabin out in the remote, mountainous woods of Colorado. In the last year I have added caring for my infant son - such a joy. These years at home have taught me so many lessons - about myself, my children, about Faith and life and love. As capable as I am of providing education, love and a living for my family right here, opportunities have a way of popping up and causing self-reflection and re-evaluation. That is where I stand now.

I have recently been presented with some of those opportunities. You may not know this, but I grew up in, and around, a small family business (that isn't so small now). I have a history with natural life and products. I made a choice some years ago to leave my home town and that business to pursue our love of Colorado life, but I never made promises to myself that I couldn't keep - one of which was the possibility of going back to that home town and contributing what I could to that business.

My parents own an Aveda Salon & Spa in Iowa City, IA. I worked there through the years of my youth and for a time when my girls were very young. I took pride in my work and loved it, but there did come that time when I left it for this mountain life. I have now been called back for many reasons (a grandfather who needs me, a large family who would like to enjoy my children, four seasons, etc...), one of which is a position within the family business. I am thrilled to officially say that I have accepted a marketing position for Twin Image, Inc. an Aveda Lifestyle Salon & Spa. My hours will be flexible, allowing me to continue to mother my three children, and my compensation & benefits will make it worth leaving behind a place that I love. Sometimes priorities outweigh a love of a "place"... today I tell you from the bottom of my heart that my family-ties and responsibilities are my priority.

Obviously this marketing position will have to work in conjunction with the new family business that Jeremiah and I began together. Natural Family Supplies has also been presented with an opportunity too good to pass up! Directly behind Twin Image sits a retail space, which has been essentially empty for a few years. When my folks acquired it, it was with the intention of securing more parking for their growing business. Connected to the space is a large garage which now houses a car-detailing business, also run by my family. The retail space had been considered for a number of ventures, but nothing had ever felt like the right fit... until now! We feel strongly that Natural Family Supplies is the perfect fit... for our family and for the lifestyle that an Aveda Salon promotes! If you're not familiar with Aveda, you should know that the founder, Horst, was a generation (at least) ahead of the current natural, reusable, earth-loving movement that so many of us find ourselves a part of today. Natural Family Supplies will be complimentary to the philosophies, products, community services and Earth-saving ventures that Aveda promotes. Although not directly affiliated with Aveda, we feel that we are the perfect fit for that lonely retail space and believe in that old saying: "Everything happens for a reason". The reason it has continued to sit empty is that we were all waiting for this day to come.

The time is now!

As we make our move, I plan to share the steps we are taking with my lovely readers, friends, family, customers and those who have yet to enter our life. I promise to continue to provide excellent service to those who support Natural Family Supplies (or "The Natural Family" - what our brick and mortar shop will be called) and Twin Image. I also promise to be the same caring, involved, natural, earth-loving, Mountaintop Mama that I have always been to my children. What is in my heart and soul cannot be changed and I view the future optimistically. We're not selling the cabin, we're not saying that we won't be back... we're really not saying much, except that the time is now for Mountaintop Tribe to Journey to the City! A New Addition

Everybody's doing it, right? Hopefully you are part of the movement to put an end to plastic shopping bags, and if not, maybe I can persuade you to become part of it.

Plastic shopping bags are just plain wasteful, for one. How many do you think the average person could/would use weekly? What happens to the majority of them? Where do they end up and what effects do they have on our planet? Here are some facts that you should know:

Plastic bag facts

Approx. 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. That’s more than 1,200 bags per US resident, per year.
Approx. 100 billion of the 380 billion are plastic shopping bags.
An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags.
Only 1 to 2% of plastic bags in the USA end up getting recycled.
Thousands of marine animals and more than 1 million birds die each year as a result of plastic pollution.
The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean.
Plastic bags are often mistakenly ingested by animals, clogging their intestines which results in death by starvation. Other animals or birds become entangled in plastic bags and drown or can’t fly as a result.
Even when they photo-degrade in landfill, the plastic from single-use bags never goes away, and toxic particles can enter the food chain when they are ingested by unsuspecting animals.
Greenpeace says that at least 267 marine species are known to have suffered from getting entangled in or ingesting marine debris. Nearly 90% of that debris is plastic.
Americans consume more than 10 billion paper bags per year. Approximately 14 million trees are cut down every year for paper bag production.
Most of the pulp used for paper shopping bags is virgin pulp, as it is considered stronger.
Paper production requires hundreds of thousands of gallons of water as well as toxic chemicals like sulphurous acid, which can lead to acid rain and water pollution.

Even knowing all of these things, I have been reluctant to add just any reusable shopping bag to our inventory. I have quite the collection of .99 cent, grocery store bought, reusable bags. Maybe you do too. I figured it would take something fairly special to convince folks that spending a little extra cash would be worth it.

Wool Dryer Balls

We stopped using dryer-sheets in our laundry long ago. Two of my children have extremely sensitive skin and I suspected that the chemicals in disposable, store-bought dryer sheets were making things worse. I went through a time of using eco-friendly, liquid fabric softener in the wash as an alternative, and it was okay, but when I started using cloth diapers I learned that fabric softener and absorbency don't mix. We cut it out all together. I was a little bummed. We live up in the high mountains of Colorado. It's a dry climate and it causes a lot of static electricity. It drove me crazy to pull what I thought was one towel out of the dryer to find it was stuck to several others. They would spark and pop and cause my hair to stand straight up. I didn't know what to do! I had no idea that there was a solution to this problem... not until I stumbled across Wool Dryer Balls when searching for colorful wool balls for play for the baby!

They couldn't have come into my life at a better time! It sounds silly, but I was relieved that I had found an answer to my static and softening problem. I ordered 12 colorful, wool dryer balls from a lovely woman, Tara Fletcher. I kept 6 for my family, and gifted the other 6 to a dear friend who was in the process of greening up her laundry routine. Not only do the dryer balls soften laundry, they speed drying time by leaps and bounds by drawing moisture out of clothing. You’re probably wondering what these are, aren’t you? Well, they do a number of wonderful things:

1. They are an eco-friendly alternative to the conventional dryer sheet.

2. They do more than a dryer sheet by pulling the moisture out of your clothes so you don’t have to run your dryer as long, saving you time and money.

3. They reduce static just like dryer sheets do.

4. They soften your clothes like liquid fabric softener when they’re bouncing around your dryer. Fabric softener has harsh chemicals that make your clothes soft and also increase the flammability of your clothes putting you at risk of a dryer fire - not fun!

5. They’re wonderful cat and dog toys when they “accidentally” make their way out of the dryer!

6. They’re made of 100% wool so they’re safe for babies to learn about colors and as a counting tool, they love the texture!

7. They’re absolutely WONDERFUL for cloth diapers! They keep them soft and clean without the harmful chemicals in conventional dryer sheets.

******* FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS! *******

Q - How long will these dryer balls last?

A - I’m still using the ones I made over EIGHT years ago in my dryer and they are just as effective as the ones I make today - so, years and years! Did you know the average household spends over $250 on dryer sheets alone for their laundry?
Q - What kind of wool do you use? Is it wool yarn, roving wool… ?

A - I use 100% wool yarn which I felt three times over so you have no worries of it unraveling. I’ve found through experimentation that roving wool pills a lot more than wool yarn and you have to shave the little pills off frequently. I’ve also found that roving wool doesn’t absorb the moisture in your clothes quite as well as the wool yarn does.

Q - How big are these dryer balls?

A - Though they are individually made by hand they range between 8 and 9 inches in circumference - approximately the size of a tennis ball (except without that horrible racket!).

Q - How are these any better than the plastic (PVC) ones that I got from my local superstore?

A - They are VERY different actually! The conventional plastic ones you see on TV and in your local store are made from plastic and when heated can emit harmful smells that can irritate the lungs. They also do not speed up your drying time as my 100% wool dryer balls do. My dryer balls also do not make any extra noise unlike the plastic ones which sound like someone is trying to break into your house! Plastic dryer balls can also rip and tear some more delicate clothing as my dryer balls do not.

Q - Do they reduce static?

A - They sure do! Some other ways to help reduce static are to put a ½ cup of vineager in the rinse cycle of your wash and also to keep your natural fibers (cotton, silk, etc.) separate from your synthetic fibers (rayon, fleece, etc.) when in the dryer. The friction between the natural and synthetic is a major source of static.

Q - How many dryer balls do I REALLY need to use?

A - It really depends on what kind of load you’ve got. If you’ve got a small load of delicates then 2 to 4 will be more than enough. However, if you’ve got a huge load of nothing’ but fluffy wet towels and jeans then the more the better! I usually put in 10 to 12 in my really large, heavy loads. A good rule of thumb is, the more you use, the more it’s going to save you. To be honest, I just keep all 12 of mine in the dryer at all times! Of course, that comes from the person who has dryer balls coming out her ears!

Q - How much are these dryer balls REALLY going to save me?

A - Again, it really depends on how many you use but starting with a set of 4 is a good place to start and they will save you between 40% in a small load to 25% in a large load. And it only increases with the more dryer balls you use!

Q - Is it safe to use the fancy colored ones with my whites? I don’t want any tie dye shirts!

A - All of my dryer balls are color fast and WILL NOT run on any of your clothes, I’ve ran my ‘Pink Paradise’ set (reds and pinks!) in my dryer with nothing but whites and not even a hint of red was on any of them.

Cloth Diaper 101

Cloth Diapering is fun and easy! Maybe you believe that, and maybe you don't - but, I'm here to tell you that it is the truth! I know that if you are a parent, you love your little baby so much. I'm certain that you want the best for that baby. You want good health, a happy and non-toxic environment, and you want comfort. When it comes to diapering, these needs are best met with cloth! I always think about how much I would like to wear a paper/plastic diaper, full of undefined chemicals, all day, every day for 2+ years. I think about how fast our garbage can would fill with human waste (illegal) and trash (disposable diapers take an estimated 500 years to degrade). I don't think I'd like it very much at all. How about you? That being said, never fear the cloth diapers of old with sharp pins! Cloth diapering doesn't have to be old fashioned at all... it can be - for those looking for the most affordable, budget-friendly method, but if you're willing to make a bit of an investment (which is typically the cost of 9 months of disposables), it can be as easy as disposables (sometimes referred to as "sposies" in cloth diapering circles).

I'd love to take you through some of the basics of cloth diapering, with a bit of a disclaimer: There are so many options out there that it would be nearly impossible to touch on all of the methods, types, brands, etc.. without writing a very long book! So, here is the best of what I personally know about cloth diapers. This is the way we do it, and what we've found to work the best in our home with our baby! We'll start with the most budget friendly way of cloth diapering and work our way up to most convenient and slightly more expensive methods. After I describe the diapers, I'll address some other questions like "How many diapers do I need?" and "How do I launder cloth diapers?"... and, of course, I'm always available by email to answer more question!

Prefold Diapers + Snappi Fasteners + Covers

This is the modern version of the old-fashioned way. A prefold diaper is basically a rectangular piece of cotton (or other fabric) that is sectioned into thirds, the middle of which is thick and absorbent. Prefolds must be "folded" either into thirds and laid in a cover, or folded and fastened with pins or a Snappi, and then covered. There are many methods and options for folding the prefold, and I am aware that a lot of mamas and papas just fold them into thirds and place in a cover. Whatever the choice, this can be an extremely budget friendly cloth diapering method. I believe that I could cloth diaper a baby, with Osocozy prefolds and Wallypop fleece and PUL covers for around $200 - from birth to potty.

How to use a Snappi.

We also enjoy using a fitted prefold by Osocozy that has been sewn to the contours of baby and has velcro closures. This is an easier way to basically use a prefold, and skip the folding! This diaper also requires a cover!

Fitted All-In-Ones

The Osocozy Fitted AIO comes in 2 sizes!

"Fitted" diapers come in sizes! That might sound silly right now, but will make more sense when you read about "One-Size" diapers. All-In-One diapers are nice because they are just one piece... so, no liner, nothing to stuff in a pocket or snap in. The downside is that they take longer to dry and don't necessarily wash up as easily or as nicely, although we really like the Osocozy Fitted All-In-One. I would classify the Oso as a budget diaper because the price is nice - a lot less than your average cloth diaper, and they hold up very well.

Bottombumpers Fitted AIO

Bottombumpers also offers a nice, fitted diaper. I would consider it to be an AIO too, even though it has a snap in liner that can be removed. The BB snap in liner is nice because it is folded to provide extra absorbency without the bulk. Because of the fold, it is not a super-thick one-piece, so it washes and drys easily. The liner and interior of Bottombumpers diapers is 100% Certified Organic Cotton, and CO Cotton Velour. I haven't actually worn one ;), but would imagine that this feels very cozy against baby's sensitive bottom! Here you see an infant in a fitted AIO. These diapers come in 3 sizes, but I would say the medium would fit the average 6 month old through 2 years! A great investment!

One Size Diapers

Bottombumpers One Size

Here's the scoop on One Size diapers: They are fabulous, they last from (theoretically) 8-40 lbs, they are easy to size up and down using a few snaps, and they are not bulky... at least not the ones we use! The reason I say "theoretically" is because even at 8 lbs, a brand newborn infant may not be quite ready. In which case, I would recommend using prefolds if budget is a concern, or the Small Bottombumpers Fitted Diaper. After that initial newborn phase, a One Size Diaper can really last through potty-training and can even be handed down to your next babe, or passed on to a friend! One Size Diapers are the best option for the most bang for your buck! We like two different brands of One Size Diapers: Bottombumpers & Knickernappies. The Bottombumper One Size is very much like it's fitted, except that it has snaps instead of velcro and that it snaps to shorten or lengthen depending on baby's needs. Don't be afraid of snaps!

The famous Loopy-Do

Knickernappies One Size diapers are a "Pocket" diaper, meaning that they have an insert that is literally stuffed into a pocket at the back of the diaper. Very easy to use, and you don't have to take them out at laundry time - they come out themselves in the wash! Knickernappies offers two types of inserts. A microfiber that is very absorbent and works fantastic, and what they call a "Loopy-Do". A Loopy-Do is essentially a loop of fabric that is microfiber on one side, and hemp on the other. It is looped so that when inserted, it is very thick, and wonderfully absorbent - suited for overnight use - but, because of the loop, it washes up extremely well and dries fast! We love Loopy-Dos and really believe in their quality, especially for night usage! The hemp has an extra bonus - it is naturally antimicrobial and doesn't start to stink in those wee-morning hours. It goes the distance.

Knickernappies One Size Pocket Diaper

The inside of a Knickernappies diaper is a soft layer of microfiber that seems to never stain! Plus, as baby gets older and messes become a bit more solid and substantial, you'll find that this microfiber is a breeze to rinse off (especially if you have a diaper-sprayer attachment on your toilet)! Knickernappies is what I reach for when I'm lucky enough to have one clean!

So, those are the basics on the diapers... this is just the 101!!! Look for more in-depth, and specific blogs in the future about cloth diapers. I also want to address some questions I believe folks have when they begin to think about cloth diapering.

How do I care for cloth diapers?
It is so much easier than you might think! If a diaper is just wet, toss it in a "wet bag" which will contain your diapers, protect your bin or can or floor - wherever you keep your dirty diapers. If it's a messy one, either rinse with a sprayer (these easily attach to your toilet), or dunk in your toilet and then throw into the wet bag. Store your diapers in the wet bag until wash day.

You may want to have a sprinkle of baking soda in the bag to minimize odors, but it's not necessary. When wash day comes, turn your bag inside out within the washer. You don't really have to "touch" anything too dirty! Run a cold rinse cycle, wash on a normal, warm cycle (we use Charlie's Soap), rinse once with white vinegar, and then a final clean rinse. Either hang to dry, or a warm cycle in the dryer. Too hot isn't a good idea.

What about stains? Should I use bleach?
I wouldn't use bleach. Instead, on your next sunny day, either hang or lay diapers in the sun. No matter how many times your diapers have been washed and dryed, the sun will miraculously fade all of your stains! You will be amazed and can actually watch them disappear!

Should I still use disposable wipes, or is there a better alternative?

Unbleached, USA made, flannel wipes

Why use disposable wipes that you will have to sort and separate before throwing your dipes in the wash? Just use cloth wipes! They end up being tucked in the your dirty diaper and go through the wash just the same. Use a fantastic wipe solution, or spray and you'll never miss your pre-moistened, throw-away wipes again.

I leave the house a lot. Can I use cloth on the go?
Of course! The only difference will be bringing a small, zippered wet-bag to contain your dirty dipes. It's not a big deal to take cloth with you when you leave the house!

How many diapers will I need, and how much will it cost?
It's nice to have anywhere between 20-30 diapers to be comfortable and so as not to be doing laundry all of the time. To set yourself up on a budget with covers and prefolds, you could be looking at as little as $125 - $200. For a full set-up of One Size Diapers, as much as around $500. It's important to keep in mind, however, that you will spend that much on disposables in around 9 months. So, it's up to you to weigh the pros and cons before making your investment.

Waste not, want not...

I was taking the garbage out this morning, and it struck me that this time of year the garbage men must be really busy. I remember when we lived in the city... after Christmas the streets would be lined with overflowing cans of paper, cardboard, plastic, and all sorts of discarded Christmas gift packaging. Pretty sad to think of all those recyclable materials ending up in the landfill. Now, I know not everyone "believes" in Global Warming or that our careless, wastefulness will cause the world to come to an end, but isn't it just silly to throw-away what could be reused, re-purposed, recycled? I would think that most of us could agree that filling up landfills is a problem for a variety of reasons. With recycling available almost everywhere these days, isn't it worth both the time and effort?

It seems like a no-brainer for my family and me. We're not wasters! We use as little water as possible, the smallest amount of dish soap prescribed for doing the dishes, as few squares of toilet paper as possible, we make our kids finish all of the food on their plates. It's just the way we are, naturally. We try to recycle every item that can be, and we say "no" to throw-away items that have reusable alternatives (diapers, napkins, plastic baggies, plastic produce bags, plastic silverware, paper plates, Styrofoam/paper/plastic cups, straws, etc...). Of course, being conscious of these choices and actions isn't always the easiest, or the most convenient, but with good intentions and follow-through, anyone can start down the path to being less wasteful.

Here are some items that I think could help anyone reduce the amount of waste they create:

ECOBAGS Cotton Produce Bags

Why not bring your own produce bags to the grocery store or farmers' market? A lot of folks have already made the switch to cloth/reusable grocery bags, so it seems the next logical step is to cut-out plastic produce bags. These bags come in a heavy weight or cotton gauze fabric that weighs next to nothing, and in two different sizes. You can use them for your fruits, veggies and bulk bin purchases, including coffee! What a great way to reduce your contribution to the landfill... Plus, you'll look super-hip when you show up with these in hand!

snackTAXI Snack and Sandwich Bags

How many plastic baggies do you think you've used in your lifetime? What have they mostly been used for? I would venture to guess that more times than not, when you've packed a lunch or taken a snack on the go, you've used a little plastic baggie! Well, now you know that there is an alternative - snackTAXI! Seriously, these bags are fantastic for snacks and sandwiches. They are easy to clean at the sink (or even throw them in the washing machine), and you can reuse day after day... forever!

To-Go Ware RePEaT Utensils

Okay, how often would you estimate your usage of plastic, throw-away utensils? It would depend on how often you eat out fast-food style, how many pot-lucks you attend, sporting events, birthday parties, school lunches... I mean, the list really can go on, and you won't realize the staggering number of times until you DON'T throw utensils away anymore! Plastic utensils (a lot like plastic baggies) don't seem like they have a big impact when it comes to wastefulness, but I can guarantee you that over the course of a year, you would be shocked at how many spoons, forks, knives and chopsticks you throw away! These RePEat utensils are lightweight, fun and easy to bring along. Just stick them in your diaper bag, purse, glove box, or use the little clip and attach them to your belt loop! You'll be happy to decline the throw-away alternative!

SKOY - The Paper Towel Alternative

Let's face it, we all know that it's a total waste to use and throw away paper towels, but how many of us still buy them like crazy? Do you reach for one every time you wash your hands, spill a drop of juice, wipe the counter down? Why? These SKOY cloths can truly take the place of your paper towels! You'll use them again and again, throw them in the laundry or sanitize in your microwave... you won't just be throwing away trees or your money anymore! Plus, they come in fun colors and are much stronger than the kind on a roll! You will love them!

To-Go Ware Stainless Steel Tiffins

Plastic is funky, isn't it? Aren't we constantly hearing about all the toxins in plastic and wondering what it's doing to us, to our children? Plus, tupperware just doesn't hold up - and then what happens to it? Yup, most likely it gets thrown away. Stainless steel is an excellent alternative to plastic and I think if you try it, you won't go back.

Cloth Diapers

If you don't know how awfully gross disposable diapers are, just give me a call or shoot me an email and we can talk about it! Did you know that it's illegal to dispose of human waste in your garbage? I don't think enough of us realize that and I'm almost sure that hardly anyone is dumping their disposables in the toilet before dumping them in their trash can. Did you know that once your diaper is in the trash it goes next to the landfill where it will sit for about 500 years? Did you know that cloth diapers are easy to use and wash? Did you know that a good set-up of one size cloth diapers will cost what 9 months of disposables do and that babies typically wear diapers for 2+ years? Well, again, I think if you are a parent or parent-to-be, cloth diapering has so many benefits... and yes, one of those is less waste!

Well, there you have it! Might I suggest, as we move into a new year, that you resolve to waste less in 2011?

What a Wonderful Weekend!

Our Booth!

Here is a glimpse of our little booth at the Fairplay Holiday Bazaar! It was everything we had hoped it would be, and more! This was our first time vending at any event, ever, and I think we did ourselves proud! It was a lot of work to pack up all of our "supplies" from our shop Natural Family Supplies, set up the display, and stay on our feet all day with three little ones in tow, but WOW - it was sooo worth it! So happy to see all of our dear, dear friends and people that make up our special community! We certainly felt the love and were thrilled to show what we have and share it all with the fine folks of South Park County, Colorado!

Plan Toys were a hit... lots of lucky kiddos will see these under their trees this Christmas!

It is becoming more and more apparent to us that there is a want and a need for the products we carry in this part of Colorado. The Green Movement is a big deal in Colorado, and we know folks around here are enthusiastic about being a part of it! Colorado is pretty progressive when it comes to being natural, eating organic and reusing/recycling as much as possible. I think a lot of "us" here in the mountains have been curious about many of these products for a long time, and I think it was appreciated that the Bazaar gave everyone a chance to touch and feel and see in person what this "stuff" is all about!

We were especially happy (as I'm sure you could have guessed) to talk to many mamas about cloth diapering and baby wearing. I brought a rainbow of Bottombumpers and Knickernappies cloth diapers to show-off ;) and many, many baby carriers, and there was a genuine interest in these types of products! It was my pleasure to bring products to this part of Colorado, that are otherwise only seen in online shops! This was our goal in the beginning, and I think we're well on our way to making it happen for more and more communities!

Sunday was a perfect follow-up to Saturday's hard work. It was the annual Lady's Cookie Brunch and boy was it a hoot. A good friend hosted and invited us all to bake four dozen cookies using Agave Nectar in place of white sugar! Now, this was my first year in attendance, and I did not realize that this was a competition... had I, I might have tried a more elaborate and fancy recipe. I opted to make Snickerdoodles, a family favorite, and they turned out pretty nicely... with the help of some extra flour. It was a sight to see SO MANY cookies and even more fun to give them all a try!

In the end, the winning cookie was chocolate covered peanut butter balls! Those were the cookies that got my vote. The runner up was a lemon frosted sugar cookie which was also delicious! The prize: A cookbook for using agave! How fitting!

Ooh, I'm already looking forward to next year and thinking up what crazy cookie I can bake! I have to say that this event was the best of the year!

Enjoying being busy...

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving! We sure did. It was spent with great friends and celebrated with traditions new and old. I made my Grandmother-in-Law's cinnamon rolls with the help of the whole family, and they turned out so yummy! The girls enjoyed making their croissants with "auntie" Sara as they do every year... they love to have a part in the big meal, and it's fun and easy to roll them up! The day went too fast, we ate too much, and went home looking forward to next year... such a fun time!

Now Christmas is rapidly approaching and our calender is filling up so quickly! This year it is more full than ever before. We're looking forward to several holiday get-togethers with friends and a few events booked for our little family business, Natural Family Supplies. This Saturday, December 4 (Tomorrow!!!) we will be at the Fairplay Holiday Bazaar showcasing all of our products for the fine folks of South Park County, Colorado! We attended last year as shoppers and boy was it a hoppin' place! It seems like it has been a long time since I have "worked" outside of the home, and I really am looking forward to it!

We also have a little "gig" scheduled at our local general store & more Al-mart, located in downtown Alma. They were so kind to invite us to share our products with their customers... I am so grateful for the opportunity. If you'd like to visit Al-mart and see what we have to offer as well, we will be there Sunday, December 12 from 11am - 4 pm.

We've also been keeping busy doing what we had set out to do in the beginning - spreading the word about cloth diapers. I have had the chance to share what I know and what we have to offer with a few local mamas on a personal level and have enjoyed that so much! I do have a special "Cloth Diaper & Fun Baby Stuff" party next week in Summit County with some expectant mothers and friends and I'm just delighted to get to do that!!! First of all, I love getting together with my girlfriends for the social aspect of it, secondly I love babies and can't wait to celebrate with these wonderful women, but thirdly - I can't wait to share and spread the word even further about cloth! I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I have a passion for cloth diapering and really all things cloth as opposed to paper or plastic. I am so thankful that in this life I am able to do what I love... and there is so much more coming our way that I am excited to share about!!! Opportunities to grow our business are presenting themselves to us daily, and we are ready to take on all that we can! I'll share what I can as developments happen!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving really marks the beginning of the holiday season, doesn't it? It's time to get cooking and baking and shopping and caroling and cozying and snuggling! I love the holiday season...

We'll be right here at home for the holidays. Occasionally we'll make the trip back to our hometowns in the mid-west, but there is something very special about just being here in our cabin in the mountains. Always very peaceful, snowy and bright. We will make a short drive on dirt roads this Thursday to celebrate our blessings and give thanks with good friends, and we are very much looking forward to that. Tomorrow we will begin our baking... something the girls and I really love to do together.

Our responsibilities as far as food goes this year are the mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, apple pie and Jeremiah's grandmother's cinnamon rolls (wish me luck as it will be my first time going-it alone)! I found an excellent recipe for slow-cooker green bean casserole this year, and we tried it a few weeks ago to make sure we liked it. It's not the typical canned green bean and cream of mushroom soup variety, but instead uses fresh green beans, mushrooms, HEAVY whipping cream - mmmmmm. Wonder why we all add a little fluff this time of year???

Besides cooking and baking, the girls and I have tried our hands at some holiday crafts, the favorite being sculpting festive turkeys from Stockmar Modeling Beeswax. I was very impressed with both Faith and Georgia's little guys. We've had the modeling beeswax in our art cabinet for a few months now, and for some reason I was holding out on them, waiting for that "right" occasion to break out the fun stuff. This might have been just the right time... and now we have cute centerpieces to share with our friends on Thanksgiving!

BINGO - In Alma

On the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month, The Alma Foundation hosts a fun-filled evening of Bingo! We love the Alma Foundation and all that they do for our community! It is such a special place that we live in and we truly are a unique group of folks. Bingo night is just one way that we can come together to support our home. The night starts with a pot-luck and time of socializing followed by 11 rounds of fast paced, hilariously fun BINGO. The proceeds from the purchase of game cards benefit the Foundation.

I'd like to share a bit of what the foundation says on their website:

"The first individuals that came to Alma in the 1870's were tenacious people with dreams and aspirations of making a better life for themselves and their families. As a result of the profitable mining in the immediate area, the Town grew. Our older homes reflect the booms and busts of the hard rock mining era and most of these homes are occupied today. Our predecessors were hard working, very intelligent men and women emblazoned with an entrepreneurial spirit; these people built our very unique community and Alma did not disappear into a ghost town like many other mining towns in the Rocky Mountains did.

The current residents of this high mountain town are very much like our town forefathers; we come from many different walks of life and educational backgrounds with varied skills and talents. We greatly value our clean, rugged environment along with our colorful history. We understand that we are the current guardians of our land and our past. As such, we are responsible for passing a cleaner environment to our children. We are responsible for preserving our unique history before time and the elements reclaim what might be left. Our residents, my neighbors, take these issues very seriously and they take action - they volunteer their services, their time, their money as seen in our renovations of the Town Hall, the Library, and the Community Building-Church to name a few.

Isn't that great?

So, we've been meaning to join our friendly neighbors at BINGO for a long time. Finally, last night, we got it together! We made a crock-pot full of mashed potatoes and trekked to Town Hall. In an uncommon occurrence, the Beal family was on time! We enjoyed relaxing for a bit with a lot of good ol' friends, but once the BINGO started, everyone was seriously focused on the game - well, as serious as you can be with Andrew calling the numbers!

We were thrilled when Faith was the first winner of the night! It's hard to keep up with the game, as there are 6 matrices on each game sheet, but she did it! She won $5 and a dozen of Andrew's free-range, Alma chickens' eggs! (She's saving up for Christmas shopping and can't wait to play again,)

We had so much fun at BINGO and I'll know we'll be going back to play again next time! Seems like the perfect thing to do this winter - to venture out and be with neighbors, enjoying wholesome fun with our family, during times when the season seems long! I love our town and community.

What's in the bag?

Admittedly, I am a home-body. I love to wake up in the morning knowing that I have no other place to be. There have been times when I've stayed at home for days... and have been happy about it! There's always enough to keep me busy, and because we live in the woods, we can run out of the house and get a dose of nature without having to really pack and prepare supplies for the baby!

Of course, I can't stay in the woods all of the time! We need groceries, have meetings to attend, and friends to visit! So, this home-body does get out and about! It's not always something I look forward to, as it's always a project to pack up supplies for the whole family, but I've at least made a list of essentials for the diaper bag so that I can check items off quickly and get out the door with less hassle!

It has made a difference to become organized in this way! You see, once we leave the house, there's no doubt we're going some distance and that returning home for a forgotten item is out of the question. Happily my Cinda b diaper bag is big enough to fit everything we need, plus some - but, not too big that it's cumbersome to carry around! In fact, I just love that it's super-sturdy, yet lightweight! It's so easy to wipe clean if I bump it up against the dirty truck or if baby smears some snack on it... and if it gets really dirty, It's machine washable!!! You know what else I love about it? It's made in the USA! How nifty is that? I had such a hard time finding a good, functional diaper bag when I was pregnant... I was thrilled when I happened upon Cinda b's bags!

Okay... so, what's in the bag? The essentials, of course! Here is my handy little list:

We had over 450 entries for our giveaways and were pleased to hear from folks all over the country! Congratulations to the winners and a big THANK YOU to all who entered. It did make for an eventful first week of business.

Speaking of business, it's back to our routine around the Mountaintop Tribe home. Our little cabin in the woods is nice and cozy today with the wood-burning oven roaring, baking a cake for a friendly dinner this eve. Right now, snow is gently falling and we're happy for the accumulation! Our local ski area opens tomorrow and the kiddos and daddy are ready! For now, we are focused on our homeschool work... it is a daily duty that the whole family participates in. We are committed to homeschooling so that we can enjoy a life at home together, focused on well-rounded learning, sharing in the work-load, and having the freedom to play together whenever we feel the calling.

This year, we are using a Waldorf curriculum from Live Education. We really are enjoying it, and the children are learning in a new and refreshing way. This is my fourth year homeschooling my children, and I have to admit that in the past I was very much into text & workbooks. I felt that using those types of materials were the only way I was going to be assured that my children were getting a full and balanced education. I wanted to stay somewhat close to the typical public school method of teaching. Over the years, however, I have also found myself feeling like my children would be better served by being allowed to be more expressive, imaginative, and free. These feelings have been vilified by the enthusiasm and progress I have seen since beginning Live Education.

Waldorf encourages children to create their own books - textbooks and workbooks. The use of natural art supplies, such as modeling beeswax, beeswax crayons and natural, watercolor paints is also encouraged. Faith (pictured above) has completed a unit on Hebrew Myths and Culture this year, which included studies on Watercolor Painting (painting the days of creation from The Old Testament) and Shaded Illustrations (drawing illustrations for the story of Noah and the Great Flood). We very much enjoyed learning the basics of watercoloring and using beeswax crayons properly - even if the recommended "hold" felt a little funny for awhile.

Using natural art supplies and large pieces of heavy duty paper, I think, helps to instill a sense of purpose and pride in a young "student". We presented the supplies to our children in such a way that they knew they were getting something special. The beeswax crayons by Stockmar look and feel so much better than your everyday petroleum wax crayon - and you can tell a difference the first time you spread color on paper! They look beautiful, and yes, even children notice the difference. The Stockmar Watercolor Paints are also surprisingly different from the norm. They are not little "cakes". They are a liquid concentrate that one can dilute to their liking to create lovely paintings with any level of intense color they choose. We have had such great experiences getting to know these natural art supplies. We encourage others, who wish to teach their children to value their work, to try some of these products in their own homes!

A little bit more about Live Education and homeschooling... My youngest daughter, Georgia (pictured above), has benefited immensely from the Waldorf approach. As all siblings are, she was so different from Faith in that she wasn't as eager to sit down with a book to read, or to work out story-problems, or puzzles. She was my "fairy tale princess" always acting out with her dollies, carrying on conversations with herself and living in a little world that she had created. Obviously she was geared toward the arts and I found using texts and workbooks with her to be incredibly frustrating! She did not want to cooperate or learn in that way. Waldorf has actually changed everything for her. Having an artistic outlet brought Georgia out of her shell. She began to listen and learn and read and write - all very suddenly! I think she felt (feels) understood for the first time. Homeschooling isn't for everyone, but if you do have the opportunity to teach your children (well:), it is amazing to see firsthand how they learn, and then tailor your teaching style to their needs. I finally feel like I'm doing her justice by home educating her in a way that works and that she enjoys! Georgia's favorite activity is definitely drawing. She loves her Lyra Ferby Short colored pencils and her Waldorf Assortment of Stockmar Beeswax Crayons.
